Rob’s Faves

David Crowder Band*****

Church Music

As usual DCB pushes the boundaries of “normal” praise and worship music. The title to the album is a littledeceptive.

When I heard he was coming out with an album called “Church Music”,I though it was going to be some hymns done in DCB fashion. NOT!!! It’s a great mix of electronica and rock. He probably uses more loops and electronics on CM than any pervious release. He was in Charlotte recently and the Keeners said it was awesome! I wished I would have been able to go. It would have been great to see him in a smaller venue (Forest Hill Church). But I got a second chance at the National Youth Workers Convention in Atlanta a few weeks ago with some of our adult leaders.

Of course you can’t listen to a DCB album and not be pulled in to immediate worship. His lyrics are like modern day Psalms. It is encouraging, uplifting, inspirational, and it lifts high the name of God. Which is always good if you’re doing a worship album. Anyway, if you like DCB go get it “NOW”!!!, even if you don’t get it anyway!!!

Favorite Track: “How He Loves”

Fee****

Hope Rising

I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. We have worn out his first offering of songs in SNL since we heard him at BigStuf Camp a few years ago. And even though he has gotten too “BigTime” for us at “BigStuf” we still love him or at least I do. After seeing him at BS, Charlotte One, and at Weddington UMC recently, he remains one of my favorite worship artists. His songs ROCK!!! This album continues in the same vein as the last. There are great rockers, mid-tempo, and ballads. But he did throw me a curve with “Promised Land”. He used a special effect/vocoder on his voice thats different and wicked cool. It’s an old song that he revamped. This is another one that you need to download asap.

Favorite Tracks: “Promised Land” and “You’re love is Better than Life”

Red Umbrella****

Living and Surviving

Red Umbrella is a lot like Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, MuteMath, and Modest Mouse. They are “New Wave” incarnate. Most of you don’t even know what “New Wave” is. It’s an 80′s thing. They kind of remind of a few bands that us old folks used to listen to back then like The Pet Shop Boys, Wang Chung, Simple Minds, INXS, and others. But they remind me a lot of the Kinks. (“One thing leads to another”) They use all that “old” new wave and give it a new spin. If your looking for something a little different check out RU. They have another album called, “Wishing for Boardwalk”.

Favorite Tracks: “Boompop”
and “Beckoning”

(“Beckoning” is on the HUMYF mp3 player by the way)

Other Bands or artists you need to check out: Starfield, Me in Motion, Vota, Jade Harrell, Mat Kearney, Emery, and the Almost. Just to name a few.
