| Here are some Ministries and Missions HUMYF supports or is involved with:
(See current service opportunities on humyf events page.) Compassion International: Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training. Today, Compassion helps more than 1 million children in 25 countries. 30 Hour Famine/World Vision: Every spring we have our “Cardboard City” and fast for 30 Hours to raise money and awareness for World Hunger. All of the money that is raised is sent to World Vision to support starving children all over the world. During our famine we build cardboard shelters (“Cardboard City”) to stay in over night. We get a small view of what it means to be hungry and homeless. We have gone through local neighborhoods collecting canned goods for our local food bank during the famine. Bethlehem Center: Ministry to inner city neighborhoods. Childcare and Tutoring. HUMYF is involved with any clean up and landscaping that needs to be done around their campus. We will be doing a Middle School Missions week at Bethlehem Center. We will be helping with their summer programming for kid’s in the inner city. Angel Tree: During the Christmas season we partner with our church to collect and distribute gifts to children of adults who are in jail or in prison. Jamaica: We go to Jamaica each summer with YWAM (Youth with a Mission). For a week, we do a VBS and minister to a Fishing Village (White Sands) near the Montego Bay Airport. We also visit children’s homes and orphanges. This trip is only for rising 9th graders and up. Salkehatchie: Our church has been participating in Salkehatchie for years. We are currently do our mission project in Columbia, South Carolina. For a week, we repair homes and minister to residents in the Columbia area. Shut-Ins: At Christmas time we visit some of the shut-ins in our church. We bake cookies and sing Christmas Carols to hopefully make their Christmas season a little brighter. Plus it makes ours a lot brighter for spending time with them. Charlotte Rescue Mission: For many years our youth have been involved in serving food at the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Room in the Inn: RITI as it’s called is a city wide ministry to the homeless. Churches all around Charlotte open their doors to allow the homeless a safe place to spend the night. We also provide dinner, breakfeast, and following days lunch. Our guests come once a week during the colder seasons of the year. Our youth take 2-3 nights a year.
